Snacks

In the “conventional” (aka Western Diet) world, “snacks” are usually between-meal treats, providing more (temporary) pleasure than sustenance. However, this book defines snacks as meal-quality foods that are especially quick to prepare, requiring 5 minutes or less (not including the preparation of pre-made ingredients such as dipping sauces).

This section also includes two particular recipes which seem also to best fit in the snack section:

Below is a list of some sample snack ideas. How do you and your family like to snack on your local in-season “wholesome herbs”? Share with us your own favorite snacks using fruits, vegetables, and nuts so we can share your ideas with others.

Fresh Fruit

Fruit is sweet, delicious, and, in many cases, naturally pre-packaged in serving-sized portions. See Seasonal Fruit Salad for a starter list of suggested fresh fruits.

Fresh or Toasted Nuts

Nuts make a great snack, whether raw or toasted. Nuts also combine well with many fresh fruits and vegetables.

Fruits or Vegetables Dipped in Walmonut Butter

Homemade Walmonut Butter makes a nice dip for many fruits and vegetables, including apples, peaches, bananas, strawberries, carrots, celery, and bell peppers.

Bananas Dipped in Toasted Walnut Crumb

Toasted Walnut Crumb gives a different texture than nut butter and makes a great snack with a banana or other fruit.

Sweet Potato Toast

Although listed under Breakfasts, Sweet Potato Toast would make an excellent snack. If you have sweet potato loaves pre-baked and chilled in the fridge, then cut yourself some slices, toast them in a toaster, and lather them with Walmonut Butter and some sweet fruit, or Sweet Guacamole.

Vegetable Sticks Dipped in Guacamole or Salsa

Slice cucumbers, zucchini, and/or bell peppers into rounds or sticks and dip in Loaded Guacamole or Easy Raw Salsa.

Spiced Jicama and/or Cucumber

Slice jicama and/or cucumber and sprinkle with lemon juice, salt, and chili powder or diced hot peppers.

Carrots and Tomatoes

A surprisingly good combination, carrots and tomatoes are as complimentary in cuisine as they are in the garden.[1]

Toasted Seeds

Toasted Seeds are a great snack, particularly for weaning off of snacks, since they are flavorful and satisfying without a blood sugar spike (or drop).

Leftovers

Leftovers are the real MRE’s (Meals Ready to Eat), a gift from yourself yesterday to yourself today! They bring quite the relief when you’re hungry, tired, and/or stressed, which surely happens from time to time.
